Common Sleep Conditions
At Family Practice Center, PC, we see sleep conditions of all kinds. That being said, there are a few sleep conditions that are common among our patients. Common sleep conditions we see our patients experience include the following:
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder in which the patient is unable to fall or stay asleep for an adequate amount of time. Those who have insomnia may find their sleep disrupted for several days or weeks at a time.
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which a patient suddenly stops and restarts breathing throughout their sleep cycle. Sleep apnea can either be caused by an obstruction in the airway (typically the tongue or relaxed throat muscles), or the brain’s inability to send the rest of the body proper signals to breathe during sleep.
Restless leg syndrome is a sleep disorder that causes a patient to have the uncontrollable urge to move their limbs throughout the night, typically because of an uncomfortable sensation in the legs. This disorder can disrupt sleep for both the patient and their partner, as their movements are generally uncontrolled throughout the night.
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder in which patients have trouble staying awake for long periods of time and are overcome with sleep “attacks” throughout the day. This disorder is generally accompanied by extreme daytime drowsiness. Patients with narcolepsy often find their sleep “attacks” disrupt their ability to work or perform regular daily activities.
